Ragtops been installed as an option by the VW factory till 1963, followed by the steel sliding roof from 1964 on….except in Standard (non export) beetles…. in standards original factory ragtops been installed as (pretty rare) options till 1967, this is a very early production 1967 year model (fabricated August 1966) with this very weird option….

2015-08-31 10.13.19

Talking about rare… any idea why somebody would save up cost and buy a standard beetle because no need for luxury but same time ordering a factory ragtop as an option at extra cost? A question I try to figure out already my whole (VW) life …

2015-08-31 10.13.32Fact is this is one, and therefore to be considered hens teeth rare! A standard beetle on its own is already very cool as it fits precisely the aim of a very spartan but well functional car a VW beetle really is….

2015-08-31 10.13.49 This baby is a driver, You can drive it all over the place, brakes, engine, electrics all works, off course and as always we do recommend a full service before take this little gem on public roads….

2015-08-31 10.14.07 The dashboard has absolutely nothing about luxury and only features what You really need to drive a car… the dash is also unhacked and there was never a radio….

2015-08-31 10.14.21No headliner on side posts… ah, standards didn’t had anything with full size headliners, but had a lot of paint inside in og body color, cool huh? Especially with that crazy hole in the roof….:)

2015-08-31 10.14.46Let the sun shine in!  Ragtops are over practical, even in grey and rainy Belgium You drive ragtops open 9 months a year, so easy!

2015-08-31 10.15.34Interior is all there, needs to be re upholstered but the correct materials are available, so not too much of a problem…

2015-08-31 10.15.54 Underneath the car might need some attention… or r-tear it all apart and make it a full resto, or drive with minor repairs as last owner did… your choice, anyway it has some works for sure, but is so special!

2015-08-31 10.16.57Tons of paperwork, mainly old bills going back to the sixties, do show this beetle was regularly serviced by its long time lady owner always at the official dealerships from the importer in and around Brussels Belgium… this baby has a real high pedigree!

2015-08-31 10.25.29Sitting in the sun it makes You dream doesn’t it? Yes we still dig them and this one is no exception!

2015-08-31 10.31.31Now… are You prepared to add some real rare VW to you stables? This baby is so rare, changes are very low You will ever finds another one, so  don’t  delay, don’t let this one slip away and contact Bob today….

30 august 2015 - Inside BBT

Yes, that’s how long it has been, that a couple of american VW friends decided to organise a “Back to the fatherland tour”

Thriving spirit behind the whole thing was Bill Collins and he gathered a whole bunch of VW friends from East and West Coast to participate on this crazy trip… all in early VW iron they wheeled all over the USA , UK and mainland Europe with Bad Camberg as their final destination.

We, at BBT HQ, hosted them a lunch break on their way through Belgium.

Here are some of the participants on the BBT parking lot, in front is Martha, the famous all original oval window beetle from Bill Bowmann from St Louis Missouri, co driver was Tom Niedernhofer before he moved to California.

1999 Back to teh fatherland toer_blog

Times flies as we all can see, but fond memories are here to stay forever!
